Should We Ask “QUESTIONS” To Paul Whitehead About Genesis?

This story is strength but its true. On last posting in my blog about 2 weeks ago I wrote about progressive music, cover album and the designers. When I wrote about my fave Genesis on “Foxtrot” I mention about Paul Whitehead, the man behind impressive art for legendary progressive rock group Genesis. He is a painter and designer for Charisma label. And yesterday I just received an invitation to art opening exhibition in Ganesha Gallery Four Seasons Resort Jimbaran. Guess who is the artist will exhibit art there? Paul Whitehead. I can’t believe it but I have checked this is the same Paul.

Why Paul is so special to me? Because he is the man whose brought Genesis character in visual and arts. The story begun when Whitehead was introduced to the band Genesis by Anthony Philip. Soon after that he was hired to do the cover Genesis album, Trespass (1970). Then Nursery Cryme (1971) and Foxtrot (1972). Paul Whitehead has achieved the impossible – creating iconic representations that reflected exactly the content of the songs. His surrealistic artwork has been missed by Genesis fans for 35 years – until 2007.

By the kindness of Resiki I can speak to him by phone and told him about this “serendipity”. Sure, I will see him at the opening on Thursday 10 Dec in Ganesha Gallery.

Paul will exhibit his paintings entitled “Questions?” Curious about what kind of arts will shown? Ted Ollikkala, Singapore wrote:
“Whitehead’s arrival in Bali and current exhibition at the Ganesha Gallery should be seen as serendipitous. A graduate of a phenomenal era, his paintings and antics are guaranteed to amuse, surprise and astonish art lovers.”

THE QUESTIONS?

Paul’s latest work is a series of aesthetically pleasing, yet profoundly thought-provoking ‘teasers’, samples of which can be seen above and at the Ganesha Gallery announcement page. Some of the (questions) paintings will be exhibited are

What make me surprise is about gossip that Paul will exhibit edition giclee prints on canvas for the brilliant artworks on Trespass, Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot, the Turn it on Again tour poster image and the Mad Hatter Charisma logo.

I think we don’t need to ask questions to Paul if we going to the opening. At the Musical Box….

Last night was great night. Miss Centhini, my collaboration with Dewi Suarjani (a lovely & cool fashion designer) finally present with other 9 collaborations in Fashion Tendance 10. It’s kind new and challenging design project but sorry about limited preparation because of Lebaran holiday and some other ceremonies before the event.

What made we both fell in love with Miss Centhini because our excitement about Centhini, the classical Indonesia’s literature said to be the ultimate encyclopedia of Javanese culture in the form of poems and rhymes. Each of its verse is laden with mystery and controversy resulting in a dichotomy.

One of our reading reference was Les Chants de l’Ile a dormir debout – Le Livre de Centhini by Elizabeth D. Inandiak. Her interpretation about Centhini based on her “long journey” on research was great.

“Originally was written in France before translated to Indonesia. It’s a philosophy of javanese tradition, the transition from Hindu to Islam in Java. Some people may say that Cerat Centhini is Javanese Kama Sutra while actualy it’s about human war to fight their inner self”. Reviewed Julita Senduk

And we compare also with “Serat Centhini” Ringkasan Centini (Suluk Tambanglaras) Publisher & Printing: PN Balai Pustaka, Jakarta, 1981. I found the books in my favorite 2nd hand bookshop “Shopping” in Yogyakarta last year.

And for both of us, Miss Centhini is a fictitious character, a reincarnation of both the goddess of knowledge and our everyday woman.
Her dresses are inspired by the way the woman on 19th century Javanese women dress. The collection focuses on drapery technique and is dominated by golden colour and printed cloud motifs symbolising a journey the dimension and time. These interpretation based on uniqueness of the book to have title Centhini even inside Centhini herself is not a main character to be exposed. Centhini is a symbol, She was only a listener whose hears and knows everything.

We are agree that the display on Fashion Tendance 10 is not our final presentation. So, we will still continue with our exploration on Miss Centhini and perhaps become a new label for fashion & accesories by Dewi with me. Hmm, seems like too ambitious but we love to do that seriously.
